Presentation at the 2025 NCLC Conference
At its annual Consumer Rights Litigation Conference on November 15, 2025, the National Consumer Law Center (NCLC) presented the prestigious Vern Countryman Award to Virginia attorney Leonard A. Bennett. Bennett, a nationally renowned consumer rights lawyer, was honored for his extraordinary contributions to consumer law that have strengthened and affirmed the rights of low-income and other vulnerable consumers.
Significance of the Vern Countryman Award
Established in 1990, the Vern Countryman Award has become the preeminent national honor for consumer attorneys. It is named after pioneering legal scholar Vern Countryman (a founding NCLC trustee) and is presented annually to an attorney whose career achievements have had a profound and lasting impact on advancing justice for low-income and other vulnerable consumers. The award’s selection criteria reflect not only professional excellence but also a strong moral commitment to economic justice. Key qualities honored by the Vern Countryman Award include:
Impact on Consumer Justice: A career with a profound, lasting impact on advancing justice for low-income and vulnerable consumers.
Leadership in Advocacy: Outstanding legal advocacy, leadership, and dedication to consumer protection throughout the attorney’s career.
Moral Commitment: Not only exceptional professional excellence, but also a deep moral commitment to using the law as a tool for economic justice.
These attributes illustrate why the Vern Countryman Award is considered the highest honor in the field of consumer law. Recipients exemplify all of the above qualities in their work, aligning with Vern Countryman’s vision of using legal advocacy to protect vulnerable consumers.
Leonard A. Bennett
Leonard A. “Len” Bennett’s career in consumer law spans over three decades, and his work has left an indelible mark on the field. His groundbreaking litigation has advanced credit and consumer reporting laws nationwide, and he has generously mentored younger attorneys, helping to nurture a new generation of consumer advocates. Colleagues laud Bennett’s ability to fight effectively for consumers both inside and outside the courtroom, reflecting the leadership and dedication celebrated by the Vern Countryman Award.
Bennett has achieved notable victories on behalf of consumers, winning multi-million-dollar judgments against payday lenders, debt collectors, credit reporting agencies, and scam lenders over the years. He has also devoted considerable time and resources to training new consumer lawyers and supporting public interest initiatives. For example, Bennett has directed sizable cy pres awards from class action settlements to legal aid and consumer justice organizations (such as the Virginia Poverty Law Center, Public Justice, Legal Aid Justice Center, and NCLC itself) and even co-founded a refugee relief program to assist low-income communities. His decades of fierce advocacy, leadership, and unwavering commitment to economically vulnerable consumers embody the very qualities that the Vern Countryman Award was created to honor.
